Interior Decorating Tips for Newlyweds: Making your first home together
| 09/24/2016Moving in to your first home as a married couple? It’s one of most exciting milestones of life. However, after having spent a lot on your wedding, honeymoon and, of course, the new home, decorating your first home could be really tough. But, no matter how tired you seem, physically and financially, you just have to start unpacking your stuff sooner than later. Muster all that excitement within you because we are here to give you some very helpful tips to turn that new place into the home your marriage will flourish in.
Tip # 1: Consider each other’s styles.
Your home belongs to both of you. No matter how passive one of you seems to be, make sure that your new home is a reflection of two different people becoming one. If your styles seem to be conflicting with each other, try to meet halfway. Determine what each values most, say a hobby or some strong preferences, and give yourselves what you need. A special spot in the house can be designed the way your partner wants it, and you get a space where you get to decorate any way you want too. Some rooms, say the living room or the bedroom, can accommodate both of your styles when you know how to mellow down your interests and then tying everything together using a motif or a color scheme.
Tip # 2: Survey what you already have.
As you move in, you’re both bringing in pieces of furniture, decors, equipment and other items which could really influence the next decisions you’re making in redecorating your new home. So, make sure you have an inventory of both your own and your partner’s stuff. Categorizing them would also help you determine what more stuff to buy and what design would go well with what you already have. You can also begin to envision the final look of your home when you see everything that you’ve got. Your inventory will also help you get rid of redundant items to help you save some space.
Tip # 3: Explore your options.
When you browse through magazines and the internet, you’ll find lots and lots of ideas which inspire you in determining your overall goals for your decorating project. Collect photos of decorating ideas you would consider using. Going to galleries and window shopping would also be a great way to spark creativity. Discussing your ideas with your partner is, of course, the best way to turn your ideas into a real plan.
Tip # 4. Shop together.
Since your first home belongs to both of you, going shopping together is a must. It’s fun and it’s a great way to bond as a couple. Choosing things together also lays the responsibility on both of you. You won’t hear any complaints later on if you have both agreed on buying it. Make sure you don’t engage in a heated argument when trying to choose something. If such an unfortunate thing happens, postpone buying it until you finally come up with the best solution.
As you begin your life together, always consider each other’s preferences and interests. Decorating your first home together could be a fun way to jumpstart a happy and loving married life.
