Shower Accessories: Rods, Rings, Liners and Caddies
The shower needs four things and nothing else: a rod that fits the opening, a waterproof liner, rings that match the grommet count, and somewhere to put the bottles that drains. Get the rod length right first. Every other decision follows from it. A complete set-up costs between $65 and $110 here.
Which shower rod fits my bathroom?
Tension rods need two opposing walls; wall-mounted rods do not. That is the whole decision. Measure the opening wall to wall, then pick the range that puts your measurement in the middle rather than at the very end of the adjustment.

A tension rod that keeps slipping is almost always carrying too much weight. A fabric curtain plus a liner on a 79-inch span is at the limit. Add a ceiling support or move to a wall-mounted rod. All options in shower curtain rods.
How many rings do I need, and which type?
Count the grommets in the curtain: 8 for a 48 in. stall curtain, 12 for a 71 in. standard, 16 for a 95 in. extra-wide.
Rings are $7.99 for a set of 12, in white, matte black, tan, pearly gray, clear and smoked gray. Two rules that are worth more than the price difference between ring types:
- Match the ring to your fixtures, not the curtain. Black rings with a black faucet reads deliberate; black rings with chrome everything reads like a leftover.
- Clear rings are the safe default when you plan to change curtains often. They disappear against any fabric.

Where should shampoo bottles go?
Anywhere that drains and is not the tub floor or the ledge. Bottles on a tub rim leave rings, hold water underneath, and are the usual source of soap scum on the enamel.
A hanging shower caddy ($10.99) is the simplest option. It hangs off the rod, drains straight into the tub, and needs no wall fixing, which matters if you rent or have tiled walls you would rather not drill.

Do I need a mat inside the shower?
Yes, and it is a different product from the rug outside. A wet enamel tub or an acrylic shower pan is the slipperiest surface in a house, and a textile bath rug placed on it will slide.

The budget column is a liner used on its own with no decorative curtain, which is a perfectly reasonable set-up for a rental or a guest shower.
What lasts and what is a consumable?
The rod and rings last years; the liner is a consumable. Spend on the rod, treat the liner as something you replace every 6–18 months, and do not buy an expensive fabric curtain until the rod and liner are right.

Common questions
Can a tension rod damage tile? It can chip a glazed edge if overtightened. Tighten until it holds a curtain, not until it will not move, and check that both ends land on flat tile, not on a grout line or a bullnose edge.
My rod keeps falling down. Why? Almost always too much weight for the span, or the ends resting on a curved or textured surface. Move to a shorter rod range if you can, add a ceiling support, or switch to wall-mounted.
Is the liner supposed to be inside or outside the tub? Inside, always. The decorative curtain hangs outside. Reversing them is the most common cause of water on a bathroom floor.
What about the floor outside the shower? A 32 x 20 in. bath rug ($34.99), or a 24 x 18 in. quick-dry mat ($24.99) if the bathroom does not ventilate well.
